April Fool’s Day: What Is the Best April Fool’s Day Joke…

The scariest alien I've ever seen!

The scariest alien I've ever seen!

…you ever played on someone or had played on you?

When I was a kid — I think I was in grade 4 — my parents played the best/worse joke ever. It was before school, so it was first thing in the morning. My dad comes into the kitchen and says our mother is freaking out because aliens have landed and so we won’t be going to school. His comment was met with silence of course, but he said it with such a straight face that even though this occurrence was highly doubtful, I wondered if it could be true. My younger brothers and sisters started to cry. I almost believed him. Then, being the oldest, I demanded to see the morning newspaper. My parents carried on this farce for 15 minutes saying there were no papers, no TV and no radio since the aliens had landed. When they finally told us the truth,  cackling with glee, I was quite offended. My siblings had cried! Even I had begun to believe them they were so convincing. That was the most memorable April Fool’s Day joke I remember. And we did end up going to school. 😐

~P.S.~ See that picture? Those are the kinds of aliens I envisioned had landed.

  1. No offense intended, but I would not keep up a farce if it destroyed the moods of children and made them so upset that they bawled their little hearts out! That must have been so scary for them! Not ok,u know?

And good on u for not believing their bs! Lol so practical

  3. What a horrible joke Kyra, you had every right to be offended. When people (adults) in my family like to tease the kids I usually don't let it go too far because I know how gullible and affected I was as a kid, by adult teasing. It's not that fun. Parents sometimes don't realize the power they have over their kids. I know my husband was teased a lot by his father with weird jokes and pranks and though he never takes it as far as his dad did, I do have to step in sometimes and pull the plug before it gets too far. I really don't want them believing things like the boogie man (which I was told about a lot when I was a kid, especially when we would pass by this creepy old house that sat at the edge of the cemetery. Apparently my parents thought he lived there, or at least that's what they always liked to tell me, to the point where I had nightmares about him). I just want my kids to feel safe and not worry about weird scary things happening to them, I'm sorry your parents (and mine for that matter) didn't feel the same way. By the way that alien picture is so creepy I can barely even look at it.

  5. Hi Keshyra,

That situation is the absolute reason I do not like April Fool's Day jokes. Saran wrap on toilet seats, yada, yada. No thanks. I never do April Fool's because I think it can be mean spirited and I always remember how I felt when I was a kid. The odd time I'll tease my Youngling, but it's more along the lines of, "Mommy's going to bite you!" which is always followed by squeals of delight. I'm with you on this one. I just want my Youngling to feel safe and know if there is only 1 person in the whole entire world she can count on to never make her intentionally feel bad, it will be her mother. I remember how bad and upset this joke made me. I never want to perpetuate that feeling.

~P.S.~ I do love that movie tho. Xenomorphs are THE scariest aliens in the entire universe.

  7. Hi H!

I know right! You must be a mom! I couldn't do that either. I just think it's mean. It can be mean for adults to play pranks on adults. Leave the kids alone!
