This is a photo of Anne Boleyn I haven't seen before. Have you? She looks very young here, a time of halcyon days, before the terror of her days as queen.

Today marks the 475th anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s death by the sword of the executioner. Did you know she was maybe 35 at the time of her death? The exact date of her birth is unknown and is placed as being sometime between the years of 1501 and 1507. She was still a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. Henry’s decision to execute Anne left Elizabeth, who wasn’t quite 3 when her mother was killed by the command of her ruthless father, motherless. I still find it so sad that Anne’s death was pointless. All of Henry’s worries were for naught. Elizabeth was the the greatest ruler England has ever known. It is so sad that Anne’s life was wasted just because Henry tired of her.

As I watch my Youngling play in the golden afternoon sunshine, laughing and playing and carefree, I find myself thinking about Anne Boleyn. Did she have enough halcyon days just enjoying the sunshine? Did she ever enjoy Elizabeth just for being born a thriving healthy baby? Did she get a chance to just be with her child and bask in the wonderment of motherhood? Or was every moment tarnished by her fear of her impending doom and the wrath of Henry? Did she spend every moment scheming and playing the game of thrones and kings and power?

Part of me thinks she was so obsessed with her quest to become queen, keep Henry bound to her, and protect herself and her position from those who would see her destroyed that she never had a moment’s peace. For certain her last thoughts were of Henry. Some of her final words were of Henry, “…but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord…” I wonder what her thoughts were of her only living child? The daughter she was leaving behind; the daughter that had caused Henry so much disappointment just because she was born female. I can’t even begin to imagine Anne’s sorrow knowing she would never see Elizabeth grow to womanhood. How proud Anne would have been of her brave, smart and wily girl.

It makes me sad to think that Anne might not have enjoyed the simple and most important things in life once she became queen. Whenever I think of the saying, be careful what you wish for, Anne Boleyn and her saga goes through my mind.

Anne Boleyn’s execution took place May 19th, 1536 at 8 o’clock in the morning and was the first public execution of an English queen.

Anne Boleyn was known as The Most Happy. I wonder if she was? Maybe she was, for a time. I hope she has found happiness now, where ever she might be.

A young Elizabeth.

Today wouldn’t be today without mentioning Anne Boleyn. Today marks the 474th anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution by beheading. As y’all know, I am a huge Anne Boleyn fan. I’m still trying to figure out a reason to wear the famous “B” necklace, and I think I may have finally found it! Move over Betty!

I have always thought Anne Boleyn was a women way ahead of her time. She had a fine brain, and no, I don’t believe she had six fingers. I mean think about it. Would Henry VIII have even looked twice at her once he noticed an extra finger on her hands? If you know anything about Henry, had he seen six digits, I think you would agree he would have looked the other way so fast he would have given himself whiplash.

I love Anne not just for her feisty nature or daring feats of psychological maneuvering or political coups in a man’s world — and I could go on. I also loved her for her provocative nature, her love of fashion and trendsetting, her single minded determination, her ability to have drama and intrigue follow her wherever she went and make Tudor history scandalous. Let’s face it, Anne B. knew how to put the “S” in scandalous! I could so see her winning Survivor or having her own reality show. Now that would be scandalous indeed!

No wonder Elizabeth I was such a glorious Queen. She took the best of both sets of genes and rocked it.

If you love Anne Boleyn as much as I do, here is an awesome site. R.I.P. Anne Boleyn and thanks for the memories!

The Tudors Season 3

The Tudors Season 3

Well, I missed the kick off of Season 3 of The Tudors on Showtime on April 5, 2009, but I am making up for lost time and catching it on the ancient CBC, a beloved Canadian station. And let me tell you ~ Season 3 kicks of with a bang! Henry is as despicable as ever, and isn’t even bothering to hide the fact that he is a blue blooded tyrant. Heads are set to roll, and marble ones already are, as the churches are being dissolved and their riches ransacked and funneled into the king’s coffers. Lady Seymour has found the highest dread favor in the land by landing the king, becoming queen to England’s best known philanderer. (However, out of all Henry’s queens, she was favored the most because she bore him a son and had the good grace to die of her own volition instead of forcing Henry to kill her off when he was bored of her!)

Meanwhile, fates and fortunes are rising and falling like a waterwheel, as usual subject to the mood and fancy of the king, which is unpredictable and foul as ever. The court is as morally ragged and corrupt as usual, rife with intrigues and plotting, which is always good fun. Princess Mary has sold out to return to the good graces of the king and regained the privilege of calling him father. Now it is the little Elizabeth who must suffer Henry’s wrath and punishment simply for being the daughter of the once beloved Anne, who is openly referred to as “the whore Anne Boleyn”.

Even though I know how all this will end, I am looking forward yet again to another rousing season of romps and routs, betrayal, scheming, conspiracy, manipulation and maneuvering, pomp and pageantry, and watching heads roll and necks stretch! I also greatly enjoy watching Henry become more decrepit (and pain riddled, which is the least he deserves! Good gracious, Tudor times sure brings out the devilishly bloodthirsty side of me!) as his rottenly wicked insides start to tarnish his once glorious, athletic outer splendor. Kudos once again to Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who is simply fantastic as the deplorable Henry VIII, and to the stupendous cast who really take you back to Tudor living at its voracious best, where I guess it was very good to be king! We are very pleased indeed!
