So, exactly what does happen when you sleep?. I’m not too sure what goes on in my house, though I’m sure the dust bunnies are having a party and multiplying, but in Oren Peli’s house there is something strange going on. I took in Paranormal Activity (directed by Oren Peli) over the weekend and either I’m just too old and jaded to be scared anymore, or Paranormal Activity just wasn’t that scary, but it was definitely creepy. I was definitely creeped out by some events. And it was definitely cringe worthy for some. The kid in the front row section of the theater whimpered and cried almost all the way through the movie. (Poor little guy. Just who are this kid’s parents?) When Paranormal Activity was over, everyone shuffled out of the theater quickly and silently, which I found exceedingly strange. Usually after a movie, theater goers are feverishly abuzzing with their thoughts on the film. The theater auditorium and halls are filled with post cinematic experience excitement (PCEE).  Not so with this film. It had me wondering, was everyone simply terrifed? Or are Vancouverites harder to truly scare than LA audiences? Well, one thing is for certain. If anyone was truly scared by the antics of the demon on screen, poor Katie Featherston definitely was. You could almost feel her terror.

Paranormal Activity had all the chills and thrills in the right places, a perfect movie just in time for Halloween, and oh, how I do love Halloween simply because it’s the time of year for scary stories ~ and I wanted to be scared. I’m more of a believer than a skeptic, and I would love to go on a paranormal investigation. I have a fair sized paranormal section on my book shelves, I even have a few paranormal stories of my own, and I’ve researched the topic until the cows come home. So why wasn’t I extremely terrifed? Sadly, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that I’m just not that scared anymore by the paranormal. Or maybe it’s because I did go into the movie fully aware that it was a mockumentary about a demon seriously haunting tormenting a couple. It was filmed with a Blair Witch Project (that was scary! but I was also younger and more naive when I saw it!) style and reminded me of a very non scientific paranormal investigation, which was at times hard to take seriously because of Micah Sloat’s wisecracking, though he was funny in a comedic relief sort of way.

Legends have already been spun to hype up the movie like the one about Steven Spielberg. Legend has it that while watching the DVD, he inexplicably became locked in his room and couldn’t get out. The next day, he brought the DVD to the studio in a garbage bag, believing it to be cursed. He did, however, decide to get on board with giving this movie the go ahead.

All in all, I could have waited until this movie came out on DVD ~ I think I may have been actually frightened and really super creeped out by watching it in the apparent safety of my home, just like Steven Spielberg. Although there was one scene that had my eyes wide near the end. While Micah slept soundly beside her, Katie was dragged forcibly from the bed, out of the room and down the hall by the unseen but usually noisy demon, though it uttered not a sound while dragging her out of sight. Katie, on the other hand, screamed her head off. That scene did make me a little uncomfortable as I thought what it would feel like to actually be going through this and have something like that happen. Can you imagine being dragged down the hall by some unseen entity? Oh, and did I mention that whatever dragged her also bit her? Creepy.  A lot of people claim not to be able to stop thinking about this movie long after they’ve left the theater. A lot of people claim not to be able to sleep with the light off since seeing this movie. Do you think you will be? So what does happen when you sleep? Are you brave enough to find out?
